AN ANALYSIS OF 7th SEMESTER ENGLISH EDUCATION DEPARTMENT STUDENTS’ DIFFICULTY IN FORMULATING RESEARCH TOPIC

  This research aimed to investigate the 7th semester students’ difficulties in formulating research topic along with the strategy that the students use to formulate research topic. Through the use of a case study design, this study uses qualitative research. In one university in Cirebon, west java, Indonesia this research was conducted. Participants in this study contained 6 (six) students from 7th semester in English education department. This research instruments included a questionnaire, interviews, and document analysis. The questionnaire contains of 10 (ten) question about the students’ difficulties in formulating research topic and the interview contains 5 (Five) question about the strategies the students used in formulating research topic. Document analysis was used to validate the data of students’ research proposal in formulating research topic. The findings revealed that there were 4 (four) factors that make the students difficult in formulating research topic there were lack of reading, selecting most widely used topics, students’ uncertainty to proceed to the next phase, and students’ unfamiliarity towards strategies to formulate research topic. And there are 5 (five) strategies that the students usually use to formulate research topic, there were selecting an interesting topic, figuring out the problem around, investigating the most current issue, applying previous study as benchmark and reading more reference. Thereby, there are more strategies that done by the students compared to the difficult factor. Keyword: academy writing, research topic, strategy to formulate RT
