AN ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS’ ARGUMENTATIVE TEXT WRITING IN EFL CLASSROOM

Writing skill is one of four English skills besides reading, listening, and speaking that should be mastered by the students of senior high school. The purpose of this research is to investigate how students‟ argumentative texts are composed and their difficulties in writing argumentative text. The site and participants were the eleventh grade students, with a total of six students which categorized by their achievement at one of senior high school in Cirebon. This research used a qualitative approach with a case study design. Students‟ writing project and interviews are utilized as the instruments in this research. The findings showed that there were found 4 errors in the aspect of content, 20 errors in the aspect of vocabulary, 94 errors in the aspect of grammar, and 54 errors in the aspect of mechanics. Furthermore, this research also shows students‟ difficulties in producing argumentative text. According to the result of the interview, their difficulties were because lack of knowledge about argumentative texts, grammar, and vocabulary which students admit that finding the right word to express their mind was difficult. These difficulties are because they were not used to the English language.
